Shire Music Theatre's Xmas in July

Last saturday night 17 July 2010 we celebrated our bi-annual "Xmas in July" Concert. All the local musical and theatre communities belnded for a one-night-only concert showcasing the best of our upcoming productions. While the event was not open to the public, those who did come to support the evening were pleasantly surprised by the smooth running, strong performances and the presentation of the entire event. Credit goes to Michael Astill, SMT's President for his commitment to the centrepieces and other xmassy decor! He also co-MC'd with the gorgeous Cheryl O'Brien of Miranda Musical Society.

These types of industry events are always incredibly difficult on the performers. They are the ones who will notice the dropped lyrics or badly placed notes... But you would never have guessed if they were nervous or not. Lachlan O'Brien, The Beast from Rockdale Musical Society "Beauty and the Beast" was remarkable. As was the gorgeous, young Sassy and Jamieson from Activ Elite Performers. It was also a wonderful treat to have Engadine Musical Society "Into The Woods" Director, Kerrie Hartin singing to us with lullaby beauty, "I'll be home for Christmas". We also waved goodbye to SMT/EMS favourite, Emma Etherington who is moving to Singapore to continue her studies in performance. She will be missed! She only left today!

Despite the usual politics of musical theatre, none of this was evident on the night, thank goodness. If there was any, it was kept very private which is to be applauded. The general feeling from the night and the feedback I have recieved was that there seemed to be a sense of mutual respect for one another in the room. About time too. We all do this because we love it.

The talk of "The Spotlight Awards" has re-emerged... Excellent. Let's do it! Only this time, let's ask for some help from our local government arts sectors so we can truly make it special. I think our local musical theatre groups have been doing some terrific things in the last couple of years and the exemplar Directors, MD's, Choreographers, Sound and LX Designers, Set Designers and Performers should be formally acknowledged. Don't you?? Let me know what you think either here or on jetkeating@gmail.com

OK! Here's the obligitary plug:
